This part of the website is under construction, but we need your help! Through the Quilt of Welcome work (as well as other research), it is obvious that some languages are better represented than others when it comes to reading materials, such as stories, poetry, etc. This part of the website hopes to address this, by building a bank of stories in as many languages as possible, so we are looking for volunteers, as follows:
Writers: Can you write a child-appropriate story or poem that embodies the principles of the Quilt of Welcome, i.e. making children feel happy, welcome, and safe? NB: Not all stories have to explicitly deal with migration as a topic, and we welcome creativity! Stories can be as long or as short as you like, and can be in any language. We would *love* submissions from children in their various home/heritage languages, and they don't need to be perfect, that's where the next group of volunteers comes in.
Translators/Proofreaders: Are you confident in any language other than English? Could you volunteer to either proofread a story in that language, or to translate it? We will contact you when we have work that corresponds to your language.
Artists/Illustrators: Are you an illustrator, or someone who loves drawing/painting/illustration? Would you be willing to be contacted with a story, and to illustrate it as you see fit - with a single drawing, or picturebook style?
All roles are open to people of all ages, although we ask that those under 18 seek permission from a parent or carer before signing up.
Please see our sign-up form here - you can also submit a story directly through the same form.
Story Ideas
Need ideas for a story? Here are a few:
A story about friendship, living together, learning from each other
Pick a word or phrase from the quilt from one of the many photos across the site, and use it for inspiration
Think of your own word that makes you feel happy, welcome, or safe - can you turn it into a story?
What about the Quilt of Welcome itself? Could it go on a journey, be a flying carpet, a sail, a sun screen, a blanket? How does it connect people, and what stories would those people tell?
You can write the story in any language or mix of languages
