Thanks to Dr Anna Harrison at the University of Roehampton and the pupils and teachers at Sacred Heart School across the road, the university teaching library - full of fantastic primary school books and resources - has its very own Quilt of Welcome!
In May 2026, Sabine travelled down to the library to facilitate multilingual storytelling and quilt making. This was the first outing for "How to Unlock a Dragon's Heart", a story custom-written to have children think about words in their home and heritage languages that make them feel happy, welcome and safe. Two classes visited across two sessions in the morning, and after each storytelling activity, the children created their own Quilt of Welcome squares, which Sabine sewed into a custom wallhanging for the library. The quilt and the storytelling activity will feed into teacher training at the university, ensuring more teachers feel comfortable and confident in encouraging their home, heritage or community languages for learning. And of course, the children from Sacred Heart Primary School will be popping across the road to visit! Below is a short video about the quilt.
